Screw
caps with Stelvin
 |
|
LEVIN
uses a screw cap closure by Stelvin, a French company
started in the 1970's, for the wine in order to protect
the flavours we work so hard to cultivate in the vineyard.
Our capsules are made from a thin Teflon film covering
pure tin, with an aluminum screw closure. The latest research
concludes that wines with screw caps maintain their aromas
better. |
The wine
industry estimates that at least 5% of all cork sealed wines
are "corked", meaning that they are tainted by the
compound TCA (2,4,6-trichloroanisole) which is produced by
moulds that can grow in many woods including cork bark.
|
Cork
taint is the result of TCA contamination being absorbed
into the wine. It is characterized as anything from
depressing fruit flavour to a wet musty, odour and flavour.
With screw caps, this taint is eliminated with only
a very small percentage of bottles being affected by
oxidation. Wines sealed by Stelvin also guarantee quality
due to an absence of liquid leakage and controlled gas
exchange.
The
result is wine that is purer in both taste and aroma
than traditionally cork sealed wines. A quality wine
is always expected and, with very few exceptions, always
delivers.

The functionality
of screw caps are also a highlight of the closure. Screw cap
bottles are easily opened anywhere and can be stored and transported
in any fashion. While there still is a strong "culture
of cork" for many wine drinkers, screw cap wine is a
growing trend. Many of the top wine houses are also finding
the benefits of screw caps, and wine connoisseurs are judging
the quality of their wines higher with this closure than with
their cork sealed counterparts. While other wineries in Bordeaux
and Alsace are beginning to adopt this closure method, it
is still a cultural "taboo" to many in Europe. LEVIN
wine is committed to help break this mould and lead in the
acceptance of screw cap bottling.
